I took a couple pretty long and leisurely putts in the mountains this weekend and had time to marvel at the fine handling of the Uly. I, and many others, have commented on how effortless and natural it is to ride this thing and I spent a bit of time trying to figger out why that that is the case. I expected the Uly to be a sharp, sport-handling bike based on the steering geometry. What I find is that at speeds less than ~90 it is smooth and super predictable. I have been riding big twins for the last 10 years and have gotten used to the counter-steering method for moving those huge chunks of iron around. One of the things I noticed this weekend was that I really don't do that much on the Uly. It seems I steer more with my butt-cheeks than with the handle bars. Sure I counter-steer when aggressive action is required, but for gliding through the twisties (at double the posted limit) it's butt-shiftin' that does all the work. I continue to *love* this thing and get more comfortable every day. fubar |

The standard sport bike geometry with the wide bars greatly reduces the effort required to countersteer the bike. Drop the COG and it becomes even easier. Quite the difference from the more typical Adventure Touring bikes. It's a sport bike older broken down folks can ride comfortably on real world roads. |

I ride an Ultra also and I couldn't believe how much you lean the Uly by weight transfer, as I am MSF trained and tried to counter steer it, and found that doesn't work. Body lean ans shifting are great on the Uly nearly useless on the Ultra. I know exactly what you mean. |

You may not realize you're doing it, and it may be more responsive to steering inputs than your ultra, but it can (and does) respond to countersteering. Bosh - You are right there. You'd need the big screen for that. Butt for those who want to visualize...it's flex right - turn left. :-) I do agree with the article on counter-steering. I was just noticing how much less handle bar effort there is on the Uly and that weight shifting is more of a factor. The fun continues... |
