I've noticed a few XB12X's for sale on ebay, and one this morning had this note which caught my eye: "This bike is as new with the remainder of the factory warranty and is completely stock with the exception of a slight modification to the lower triple clamp in order to improve low speed handling by increasing the amount of left-to-right travel which was a common complaint of testers. " He's got several photos of the bike, but none showing the modification. I'm just wondering if the guy was able to get a decent increase in steering lock with this modification, or if he's just blowing smoke. The URL for the auction is: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4638708341&sspagen ame=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1 |

Whodom, maybe he will be more specific if you ask him via the "ask seller a question" function. I'd ask for pics too. |

quote:Both of these are an improvement on an already great bike and either can be reversed by whoever buys the bike if he or she so desires.
Whatever he did he implies it's reversable. I don't know what the Uly has for turn stops, don't know if it's a simply rubber bumper that he rotated or trimmed down. Reversable implies he didn't cut any metal. |

As far as I can tell the turn stop is the frame/gas tank. Just turn the fork each way as far as it will go and watch the fork tubes make contact. The lower triple clamp is below the frame and doesn't appear to have stops. Can't imagine what could be done to "just" the lower clamp to accomplish any extra steering lock. |

Did anyone also notice that BOTH lights are on? |

I've asked him what the modifications are, including: Quote "The other is a small "jumper" which allows both headlamps to remain on when in the high beam position" I'll post his answers! |

There are small ears on the lower triple clamp that engage small ears on the steering neck that constitute the travel stops. On my bike there is 3mm between the fork slider and frame at full lock... I see no "reverseable" way to increase the steering stops. |

Reply from ebay, seems like a good guy! "Sure, the easy one was the lights. After opening the switch you will notice three wires coming from the high/low button, you will need to add a jumper between the blue and the yellow wires. I used a standard blue scotch-lock connector with the ends trimed off so it would fit in the switch housing, and placed a sealant in the scotch-lock to prevent coroasion. Afterwards everything will work normally except you will now have both lights on when in the high beam position. In order to do the mod to the steering stops you will need to remove the front fender and the headlamps to provide access to the area, there you will see a raised portion on the top of the lower triple clamp which is the steering stop. I used a dremel tool to carefully grind each side of this, without touching the frame, constantly stopping and checking the clearance between the forks and the frame. I set mine to about 3mm between the fork and the frame at full lock. Also be sure to place tape around the work area to protect to paint in case the grinder jumps. You will notice an instant improvement just pushing the bike around, and low speed manuvers will be a lot easier." |

PS, mine is similar to Missin44, I doubt I'd get anything from this mod! |

Hmmm, very interesting. Perhaps the early production Uly's had some "excess" meat on the lower triple clamp that restricted the steering lock more than necessary? This guy could have an early production bike and yours could be later with the change instituted from the factory? |

That little bit of steering lock is not worth the effort. The difference between my EGlide and the ULY's steering lock is huge. |
