Dear BadWeb-ers: Every time I walk by the Uly at the dealership it turns and looks at me... and softly whispers my name as I walk by. That was the black one. Then I walked out the back of the setup shop with one of the staff for him to get a smoke. I distinctly heard a very loud "HEY..YOU.......look at ME". I slowly turned around and there was an Orange Uly talking to me! Question: Am I drinking too much coffee lately, or what? HELP !!! This cannot possibly be normal! DaveS must be sending subliminal messages through the email or something. Yikes. HELP !!!!  } | ||

Okay, it's in bad taste to do that. Sort of like when your daughters change to pig latin so Daddy won't "get it". Jlnance said "bue one" Jackbequick asked if he meant to say "buy one". Jackbequick also commented that the morse code for "e" (a single dit) was not often confused with the morse for "y" (dah dit dah dah). Bigdaddy said "fellows i b confused ? pls spl plain 2 me. tks." That is a shorter way of saying "Fellows I am confused? Please spell plain to me. Thanks." This whole thing was probably an unneeded excursion, my apologies. Jack | ||

Had a neighbor growing up who had been in the Navy during WWII. He said they would send out the news every day in CW, and he would type it up. Apparently he could do this while having a conversation with the other people standing around. I'm not quite that good I did pass the 20 wpm test way back when, but the really good people suposidly stay several letters behind what is being sent as they are writing it down. Or they can just copy it in their head. I have to have one letter on down on paper before the next one finishes. I get all lost if I don't. Ok, some how I need to relate this to Buells. I'm not sure I can pull that off ... | ||

Does the Navy still use light? I can see it being very practicle when you don't want to be eavsdropped on. | ||

I retired 15 years ago, but I can't imagine that the "skivvy wavers" (Signalman Rating) are not still using flashing light and the "rag bag" (signal flags ) to pass a lot of timely and useful info. Those guys had some of the best seats in the house too. When the weather was good and no one was shooting at you, anyway. I never could copy and read for context at the same time, it would screw me up and I'd start missing things. I liked to get about three characters behind, think about something else, watch the clock, do anything to keep from reading it. I peaked at 35-40 words per minute in my prime and can probably do 10-15 right now. I knew a lot of guys that were much better at it than I was, guys that could copy all day at 60 WPM and stay with short flashes to the 90's. Jack | ||

Oh the Signalmen rating is still doing just fine. In this can you hear me now age nobody actually looks for a large hunk of grey steel in the water. They just sit back and listen for the TX. One night we were playing "sneek in" and were trying to park in the river. Well we almost got there if it wasnt for some Asshat trying to keep his pu-tang buttered back home via his cell phone. | ||

I never got past 16 -- thank goodness For those that did they (Army, Navy, USAF, USMC) went to Ft. Devens until they hit 25. The ones left behind went to non-morse enciphered commuications training (which turned out very good for me.) I always admired the R Branchers (Navy,) 98H's (Army,) X1's (USAF,) and I can't remember the USMC. They'd do 12 hour shifts at Field Station hacking dits -- sick puppies for sure. Listening to AFN radio, carrying on a conversation, and still hitting 30,,,amazing stuff in my mind. G2 | ||
