Most of the serious BMW guys chuck those low fenders in the garbage. The trap rocks/mud and jam up the front wheel. Even the KTM guys chuck those on the 950 and the 05/06 640 Adventure. Ive actually been thinking of chucking the low fender that is on the Uly for this reason. It doesn't seem to be keeping the front of the engine any cleaner. I'd be interested in a slider mounted fender that sat a good 2-3" off the tire but had a good wrap. Something like this:

I have a question for anyone that did the front fender conversion to a regular Lightning front fender: What did you do for a headlight bracket? I bought the bracket for the lightning but it is no where near long enough and it's beyond just a couple of washers to make it work. |

Homer I had to bend the bracket a bit and use two of washers between the bracket and the tree. |

That's strange, can you post a pic when you get a chance? I had to bend the bracket as well but it's still at least an inch too short. |

Homer, I just remembered that I asked for the XB12Ss Lightning Long bracket. I don't know if the XB12S has a different P/N. (Message edited by brotherbuell on January 07, 2006) |

Will a regular XB front fender fit the Uly? It looks like it would do the trick. American sportbike has a carbon one for sale... |

Thanks Brotherbuell. Now that I think about it I ordered using the part numbers from your post on the conversion a while back - so I expect we have the same part number. I guess it depends on how you have your headlight adjusted - I based my "it's too short" comment with the headlight all the way up being at the end of the bracket slot - but that may not be necessary. I'll get a stack of washers and a longer bolt and see how it works out. Thanks for your help. |

Slowly. I mounted my plug up this weekend to verify fit, and discovered that it can't be mounted with the wheel in place. That is, the rear portion doesn't fit between the fixed outer tubes, it has to be brought up from below. At first, I thought that would kill it, as you need to be able to remove the fender to yank the front wheel. But no problem, you don't need to REMOVE the front fender to change the front wheel, you only need to unbolt it and move it up. So I'm good with most of the shape of it now. It's still going to be a while, though. |

Brotherbuell - how did you mount the loom to secure the brake line with the lightning fender conversion. I'm done with mine except for that. I ended up buying a longer bolt and a big stack of washers to mount the headlight |

Homer, I muscled the wireform bracket that is used on the lightning around the bleed valve. I had to pry it open a bit and then squeeze it back once I got it arond the valve. I used a tie wrap as an added measure to secure it. So far it's working fine. I may re-do that when I change the brake fluid just because I'm a bit AR. Some updates. Progress is slow as I am focusing most of my efforts these days on the Directlink stuff and our new catalog. But here's some mounted shots. The difficulty I'm having is achieving the right amount of fork slider tube protection. See the photos below. The red fender is a stock S2 fender. it has a back wrap around on the slider arm that is right in front of the slider tube. The Xb fender doesn't have this. So I have to duplicate that feature while still having it be easily mountable. But it's real close to getting the edges all defined, then just needs some minor contouring prior to entering the tooling phase.

Al: Put us on the list for one of the "new" fenders when they are ready. Will call you on Tuesday, with an order for other Uly stuff. Ride Safe |

Are the fenders already going to be black? I would be interested in one when they are ready. Give us a shout. Thanks |

Would it be easier to just put an extension on the existing lower fender? Just a thought. I think there was something like that for the M2 from a Triumph fender on this site but can't remember where it was. |

Actually, just extending the existing xb fender is not a good idea. There is no support behind the forks, so that section is pretty flimsy as is. With an extension there, it'd be downright floppy back there. The key is getting the fender to have some vertical section in the area that wraps around the fork legs. The stock xb fender has no section there at all. I'll get some shots of the progress nest time I drive the Uly to work. Al |
