While I've never served, I work for a company that is greatly improving family housing on several bases. It's not a "free ride" for sure. The men and women who wear the uniform work to protect of freedom and the freedom of others. I've seen them training while I've been on various installations. Believe me, they aren't having fun. I'm happy to be working for a company that is making the living conditions of soldiers and their families better. It's the least I can do for them. |

I don't think Bruce was really trying to slam us military people, he was just responding to EG1997's comment on the AF Academy. Since both statements were obviously made out of ignorance and meant to "tweek" the other, I say just let it slide. Steve |

I would never slam the military, I am a huge fan. I simply was trying to indicate that the four year old kids were clearly more malleable than the AF cadets. |

Sorry guys. I didn't mean to imply that you were slamming the military. I am just bitter over the treatment I received by a university finance department because of my vet status. That, and the way the VA had mishandled my case. The 'free ride' thing just struck a nerve (as it always has) and launched me onto yet another box of soap. |

Lowflyer. Not a problem, no offense taken. BTW-Am I wrong in the understanding that cadets at the military acad. are there with free tuition, room and board? I do understand they owe the military 4 yrs or is it 6 yrs of service after graduation. |

Not a ring knocker (service academy grad) but did go to school on an ROTC scholarship-room, board, tuition, books (but had to return them at the end of the semester) and $100/month beer money. Same as an academy but got to have a social life, too. In return, 4 years in the Corps. Not a free ride, but the Marine Corps instilled me with discipline and a work ethic that have shaped the rest of my life. Of course, where else do you get to play with vast quantities of C-4? |

Brucelee - They get an education, room and board, in return for five or more years of service. But it's not regular college, living in a dorm eating at a cafeteria. I was in regular college before I enlisted, (which was before I went to USMA.) I had a hell of a great time in my dorm as a freshman. As a freshman at USMA, I hated life, because my room was inspectable 24/7, I couldn't relax anywhere except in the crapper, and I had wicked hard classes. Not like regular college! (Although that was free too. If anything it was more free than USMA, because I was on scholarship and would have owed nothing upon graduation.) But anyway, no offense here either. I just get riled up when I hear someone say that I got a "free" education. No problemo, water under the bridge now. Let's go ride! (Oh, crap, can't do that for another 8 months or so...) |

Greetings to all those who thought this was a comparison of the ULY to the H2!!! I think you are mistaken??? This might now be about politics, fuel useage, "BIG" oil, and now even MSO (Military Service Obligation)...MGIB (Montgomery General Issue Bill), ect... SO let me start by saying Hello from Iraq on the eve of the most Historical nights in modern history for this country!!! The Votes are in and as expected the ULY won hands down over the H2...and any other Yuppy mobile out there. There are no comparisons of these two... I am also as you may have guess Proudly Serving OUR country and have been doing so for the past 19 1/2 + years!!! I too have earned the right to spend my MGIB and Army College Fund on higher education, but wait, I have also use TA (Tuition Assistance), and the ever popular eArmyU to complete my education. I have my AS in Business, and will soon finish my BS in Business, Management and Economics. At which time I will obtain my MS in Education... and yes all of these was "FREE"...well almost... everything in live comes with a price. I drive a 1 ton Crew Cab GMC 6.5 Diesel that runs on WVO (Waste Veggy Oil)...and soon as I can get out of Iraq I will own and ride a ULY...because it looks, sounds like a great, do anything (with in reason) type of bike that is fuel efficient, fun and will help me commute to college using my FREE money for school and enjoy my retirement, so I can sit back in my back yard, drinking ICE COLD Home Made BEERS, watching the sunset and wonder why you all are bitching to each other about political views and complaining about so many non motorcycle and non Buell related things on this site? This is out of control...but what do I know??? I haven't even seen a Uly yet... and I want one!!! (Message edited by waorgany on December 15, 2005) |

Waorgany: Thank you for your service to our country. When you get back home let us know so we can meet up for a ride and buy you a cold beer at the end of the day. Keep up the good fight! |

I have avoided this thread for awhile in an effort to keep my blood pressure within normal limits. But, waorgany, Thank you for your service...Whooooaaaaaa, Rangers lead the way!!! (I was an 11C, not a Ranger, you guys are nuts!) I used my "free" GI Bill, got a BS in Community Health and then took a Civil Service job. In any event, I got the education AND paid for it. Lets call it "sweat equity". I agree with Chad, let us know when you get back and we'll go for a ride and then get loaded! Until then, be safe. |

I used the GI Bill to pay my way through college. Because of that and VA hospital jobs (dietetics where I was a food server and dishwasher, and then I was a housekeeping aid which is a fancy word for janitor). I can't gripe at all about these jobs since they were both part time and I was being paid about 9 bucks an hour back in the early 80's. Wouldn't have been given those VA jobs without first having put time in the Marines. Anyway, I got through engineering college debt free. |

Crusty, Chad, Snub and EG...thank you all for the nice comments..I too have avoided this thread due to some of the many comments I have read on here, but decided it was time to speak a few words of my own...I will gladly take you all up on those Ice Cold Beer offers...God only knows I could use a few. Thanks for the support..cant wait to ride the Uly...black ones are faster than orange I am sure... yeah Ranger's aren't crazy, we just approach things from a different perspective than everyone else! Snub13, That was me and I had ran out of gas. You do not think I was going to wave you down do you? I read a Buell service bulletin stating that the fumes coming off the black paint was causing illusions of grandeur among the riders of black Ulys. |

At my dealer the black ULY (that I bought) came with a Buell logo'd t-shirt. The orange ULY came with a can of "Loafer Litener" and a pair of tights. |

If I had been referring to dust from lack of riding, I would have said, "you ladies with the orange ones can eat your own dust." Since that is not what I said, one can naturally infer that I meant that you can eat the dust that is unsettled as I speed along on my manly colored Uly. |

Slayer, I thought that was you (I noticed the Duhamil replica helmet. I didn't want to embarrass you by stopping. And just so you know, the fumes from the paint are great, how do like the fumes from our (black Uly owners) exhausts? Lowflyer, I like the "goofy" version alot better!!!!! We all get enough political crap in the rest of our lives. PS, I also got a t-shirt with the black one. |

Electraglider, Lowflyer, and of course you Snub, orange means caution, you guys are skating on thin ice! BTW, black is an official H-D color. Electraglider, damn, they only gave me a tee shirt and hat. I feel SO cheated! |

Not to change the topic of this thread back to where is started but... It just occurred to me that the Uly is more like the venerable B-17 than an H2 in what I will refer to as its "functional beauty". Now if only I was creative enough to paint some nose art on it - that would rock (but only on black) |

The sales guy I bought my Uly from told me his father was a belly gunner in a B-17; got shot down over Germany and spent a bunch of time in a Nazi prison camp. Apropos of nothing, but interesting coincidence given the last post. |

Mine RTBed missing the left rider peg and with half of its clutch lever shot off after I high-sided and crash landed in a grassy ditch. Daves sent me the parts a week later and the bike was back to 100% flyable condition in 20 minutes. Two weeks later I was on a low-level milk run when I inadvertently accelerated beyond the bike's capacity to remain horizontal. It went vertical, cracked the DOT tailfeathers, and ground the tail position light down to its last four LEDs. I was about to black out from the G-LOC, but managed to grunt it out and land the nosewheel gently. I limped back to base with four working LEDs and some of my pride in tact since this happened at night when only one other car was around. They gave me a thumbs-up as they passed by. It must have looked pretty squidly, but it was the result of my inexperience, thick gloves and a CrampBuster that had been twisted too far forward. New tail position light and new tail feathers made it good as new. We are on WX hold for the moment, but the weekend is shaping up to be in the 60s. |
