>>>>So do you think one could compete on a Uly in the Baja 1000 ? That's actually under consideration. The Ulysses is ineliglbe for the Paros-Dakar event but TEAM ELVES has a very special rider in training. We're taking his inate natural talent and having a trainer beat the balance of the needed talent in. It's not time for Baja yet, but when the time comes, TEAM ELVES will be ready. Court |

Just called the local dealer to see if they had an XB12X I could look at. He Said they got some bikes in last night and he knows one was a Buell but he doesn't know which model. He's going to check and call me back. Fair enough. Then he says "Hope it's not a Blast," and laughs. You know, like the Blast in my garrage that I rode 50 miles last night. The one I wheeled around my M2 as I was leaving. I really don't care whether the salesman likes Blasts, but I would appreciate the curtesy of not having my bike riddiculed while I am dealing with him. |

"The Ulysses is ineliglbe for the Paris-Dakar event" - how come ? They banned the big bore 'super' traillie bikes a couple of years ago after a few riders were killed in the same rallye. Now they only use the single cylinder bikes. Now I suppose somebody could put an overbored Blast engine in a Ulysses to make it eligible.... |

Hey Anon, How about the BELT? What kind of proving and testing was conducted on that? I find that the biggest Achilles Heel to any Belt Driven Buell. I know that your not going to make a belt as bullet proof as a 530 chain. I would consider putting a belt back on my S1 when the current chain finally wears out if I could be somewhat guaranteed the reliability of the new belts. PM me and I'll give you my address to send one over my way to test. Your Comments Please!!!! |

Erik B. - at the Dinner - did mention that if you offset the cylinder for big bore and stroked her, you could get a nice square 750cc Blast - I think that would work nicely, even if everything else was conservatively done to promote longevity (he said he road a prototype factory 650 that had 50 hp). So I could see a Blast set up nicely for Dakar - if you really wanted to compete - they already take a beating better than most street bikes, and that could be extended. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Newfie, the Cycle World article mentions that they were shown video of belt testing. A machine was rigged up that continuously fed small steel slugs into an operating belt and it spit them out with not problem. |

Huge improvement in the belt this year. It will not be a problem off road. Not that you CAN'T break one, but it will be rare and you can break chains, too. Good news also is that you can roll up a spare belt in your pack if you are doing a trip to Tierra del Fuego or the like. And it's only 1/4 the weight of a spare chain! |

Thanks Anon for addressing my question. So obviously the new belt can be rolled up and carried as a spare. How about changing it out? Was any thought put into changing one on the fly or in the bush, desert, bog, woods or plain old asphalt? Is the tool kit that comes with the ULY capable of doing this repair? I do realize its only 1/4 weight of the chain but I have yet to break a chain off road, let alone on road. I can see the advantage of the belt but having being twice bitten by a broken one I am reluctant to going back to a belt. My first belt broke at 19,000km and the second belt had only 4300km on it when it failed, both times it was quite obvious that a rock penetrated through it. There are other Buell Guys of the same opinion as well. If you can roll it up small then obviously it is a major improvement over the previous belts where they had to be handled very very carefully to avoid twisting and rolling into diameters smaller than the front pulley. There was always the risk of stretching the smaller cords within the belt which comprimised the integrity of the belt. How has it been improved? Of all the little minor inconvenience items that have gone wrong with my S1 the only thing that really irked me was the belt breakage. |

newfie, not to disclaim your belt breakage problems but i had a xl600 that broke chains on a regular basis, kind of forget how many times it left me stranded because of a broken chain. i lost the chain at least once and got it jammed up in the cases twice all this in less than 15000 miles |

How about changing it out? I wonder if one of the the HD Emergency Belt kits will work with the new Buells? Looks like it splices on without wheel or pulley removal. Could be a roadside fix, maybe without even the removal of belt guards. Might be worth looking into...

For those that are in the know, can we keep this under wraps for just a bit longer? Please? Court & I are working out some plans that will hopefully cultivate a kind of Buell-solidarity kinda thing. Until then, I'm over here with my bull whip & kitchen chair to keep the inquisitors at bay |

I want to know more about this emergency belt. As I sat on the road the other day waiting for a tow I thought about melting holes in it and stitching my belt w/ wire (like we do for the wide baler belts) but decided against it because it would've created a big lump, which seemed likely to break again as soon as it came under load. ...looks like the E-Belt comes in a variety of different sizes and number of teeth. I'd guess if you know what HD belt equivalent your XB would run.... Emergency Belt |

Kenb, In 2005, twins in the Dakar were limited to a max of 450cc. I asked, and was told big twins would still not be eligible for 2006. Bummer. Pete2 Dakar |

...as to the durability of a big bore Blast!...I do remember Chris Carr absolutely completely destroying a single cylinder motor during a TT race at Springfield...that's an achievement!! Just a WAG, but I think with the proper set-up and in the proper venue, the single cylinder HD motor is durable...bear in mind that there are no shortages of dyno or modeling rooms within HD... |
