It's called an adventure sport... A dual sport would wax it (me thinks, I could be wrong) on an MX track, but the Buell would shame the DS on pavement... Both would do pretty decent on a dirt road...

Adventure sport...

Anonymous, when can we expect these to be in showrooms once your release them on Sat?

Talked with my nearest dealer and he said that they will have 06 models around mid-August, and that he wouldn't know of any new models until after his next dealer show. Maybe I should tell him to go to Buell's website on Saturday... Also my nearest dealer is in Western Tennessee.

Interesting post just up at Advrider:

Just to set the story straight...

1) The adventure sportbike is not the photo shown on MCN.

2) A couple of changes for 2006 models:

Larger fuel tank with just under 5 gallon capacity

Extended swingarm, creating longer wheelbase

3) There are 2 models. Both are not adventure bikes. Neither is based on the Blast! powertrain.

4) The second model is not a sport touring bike. However, there's always the accessory catalog (along with a few smart Buell riders).

Only a couple more days until the rest of the world knows

Lots of pot stirring, speculation, misdirection, guessing, wishing, and mild mayhem going on here and other places, but 2-3 days out most of us don't have any better idea of what is coming than we did three months ago.

It has been a fun exercise and brought some life to a portion of the motorcycle world. The folks at Buell deserve a hand for keeping things under wraps and stimulating some interest.

At this point there really isn't much we can do but wait, in spite of ourselves.

I heard from my magic oaktree gnomes that it will be a sport-moped. Also, it will only be available in lime green and pink.

I think that the accesory catalog listed a training wheel upgrade package.

We don't have the details or specifics yet, but at least we have and ideal of the direction with the Ulysses. It's bike number 2 that's killing me! It's the most wonderful time of the year!

This happened last year and the year before that and etc...

It's just fun to watch.

I enjoy this time right now too. Because, this week I find out what new Buell models come out and in 2 weeks I'm on the road to Wisconsin and then Deal's Gap. It's a good year.

Heads,

Dude, that photo was dismissed as a bad photoshop about a week ago. Note recalled tube frame Buell underhung shock, redundant muffler, etc.

I do wish someone would post a really nice, high res scan of the ad from Sport Rider. Just dropped by the local bookstore; latest issue still not on the shelf. It's gonna be a LONG 3 days....

Whodom while at first I totally blew off that pic, the more I look at it the more I see. A lot of detail for a rip off. The belt guards & rear foot peg mounts for instance. Some thought went into this.

There may be a need for the space taken up by the rear shock where it's mounted on the XBs now. If so underneath is the only other logical spot suspension wise. (But not a good spot for an Adventure/Tourer I would think).

While the underslung exhaust helps as a bash guard and centering mass, etc, would you want the exhaust to dump right out the bottom on a bike that goes off asphalt? Think of the liability.

My few and minor encounters with speed bumps makes me think that the current method of strapping the muffler on is not wise for an Adventure bike.

While you are most likely right about the pic's pedigree I suggest the possibility of the pic being an early design visual concept. Far enough from the final product to not matter if leaked.

Then again maybe I need to have a couple beers, wax my crystal ball and trade in my Tarot cards. LOL

Rocket's here but unlike some of you I was out dual sporting my S1W - make that big hairy S1W - through some of the Yorkshire Dales narrowest of narrowest tricky backwater roads one can find until late last night. Water to Wetwang to North Frodingham then off the beaten track to Kirkham Abbey and through Thixendale to Fimber. Nothing on these roads except loose gravel and road kill! Consequently Rocket did not purchase his copy of MCN until midnight at the oasis! But hey some things are more important right? Did I mention the big hairy Buell is going just fantastic?

OK THE MCN PHOTO

Looking at the rag itself it could well be photo shop. On the front brake hose behind the hugger there is a clip hanging in the wind not looking like it's fastened to anything. Why? It too appears the front brake hose behind and in front of the fork tube doesn't line up. The 'tank' bag looks very odd the way it's just placed on top there. Is it \ what's it covering up? The top mounting screw on the front hugger appears to have nowhere for it to screw into unless Buell have engineered a clever device that travels up and down in relation to the fork slider. The triangular piece of bodywork under the seat looks ill fitting too as does the area where the seat crawls up the dummy tank. I just don't know. On the whole it's clear to see the picture is blown up and the use of the background though realistic is rather ambiguous. Is it real or not? Is there really a Buell XB12X Ulysses (jeez there's a word I'm gonna have to get use to spelling) sat there or not? And that's another thing. The cover on the end of the cam housing that states 'XB12X ULYSSES' looks a bit on the photo shop side too!

Perhaps MCN can offer us a clue by how they conclude their 'scoop', which I have to concede supports Steve Anderson's theory beautifully. Well done Steve. Seems I jumped the gun this time LOL.

Buell is currently not revealing any official information on its 2006 model range until this weekend. For pictures and details of all Buell's new bikes, see next week's MCN.

Now why would MCN go to the trouble of printing a photo shop job when one week later they claim to be publishing pic's and info on the actual 2006 models? Note their use of plurals. And is the statement itself an admission by MCN that this isn't one of the new models because they're in next weeks edition? Clever stuff eh?

Clearly like all the major mags MCN already have the press pack at their disposal. Why pay a designer to photo shop a fake image this late in the game?

Did I mention last nights burn through the Yorkshire Dales on my big hairy Buell. Dual \ Adventure Sport my arse. I already got one o' dem. Bought it new way back in 98!!!!

A few people have expressed concern about ground clearance and the ability of the exhaust and its straps to take abuse. The muffler, the straps and the muffler mounts are extremely tough. This happened 2-up fully laden and felt like it should have ripped the muffler off the bike. It was on a steep downhill rocky/washed-out dirt road at very low speed, the front wheel was off the ground for longer than I liked as the whole weight of the bike + rider + passenger + fully loaded luggage rack was supported by the muffler as we slid down over largish rocks sticking out of the road. (OK there was only one unavoidable big one that did the damage) The muffler is only dented in about 3/8" and still works fine. The rear straps no longer touch the muffler at the bottom but were not pulled backwards. If that's not good protection then what is? Something's gotta give.

Take another look at that MCN photo....it's not a tank bag!!! It's one of the hand guards. Just looks funny because of the photo angle.

I still think it's a photochop but....color is like the Buell ad. The clear windscreen matches the ad. Remember...they're saying is a "spied" photo. Too many similarities but it's not the actual bike. Just some of the new products photochopped onto a CityX.

Rocket, as far as I know, no general release of press material has gone out on the new Buell models. Most US journalists will be picking up press kits when they attend the Denver dealer show, and I assume Harley/Buell distributors around the world will be making kits available simultaneously with that.

Given that, MCN might create a photoshop photo because they know something is coming, perhaps even have been told some scant details of it, but don't have real photos yet. Hot news generates news stand sales, and circulation numbers are what drive profits.

But their photo isn't even close.

Of all the things that could be located at the undermost of the bike [save for a bash plate], that would need to be replaced in such an event, I think a muffler makes a fine candidate (as opposed to a shock, lower engine casing, transmission, etc.).

Didn't someone post that Cycle World had already ridden it and compared it to the BMW and KTM (for whatever that's worth)?

Also, see this thread at Sport-touring.net regarding what Erik allegedly said about it ~1 month ago: http://www.sport-touring.net/cgi-bin/msgboard/ikonboard.cgi?s=b763af7a219507ee5307a44e36f33af1;act=ST;f=19;t=32240

The mags most certainly do have info.

"Next up, a new Buell brand ad will showcase this new model, the 2006 Buell Ulysses XB12X, an adventure sportbike poised to deliver on that promise of owning all the corners. This ad will break in several sport oriented motorcycle publications in the coming weeks, in some cases before the Summer Dealer Meeting.

Then the September issue of Cycle World, the largest motorcycle publication in the U.S., will feature an exclusive cover story with riding impressions of the new Ulysses. This issue will hit the newsstands after Summer Dealer Meeting winds down during the last week of July."

Steve I like your style. I know you're a friend of Erik's so is it in that capacity you know the MCN photo isn't even close or is it in a professional capacity you speak?

As you know one doesn't require a press pack necessarily to obtain images. Most motor manufacturers have restricted areas for the press on their websites. Does this apply to Buell?

Anyway you're right. MCN isn't even close. If they were they wouldn't say they were showing the real deal(s) next week so thanks for the clues.
